BRIGHT ROTARY IN EAST TIMOR (ATABAE)
THE ROTARY CLUB OF BRIGHT HAS JOINED FORCES WITH THE ROTARY CLUB OF FRANKSTON SUNRISE TO REBUILD THE FACILITIES FOR APPROXIMATELY 50 GIRLS AT A CATHOLIC BOARDING SCHOOL IN ATABAE, EAST TIMOR. WHEN YOU THINK OF A BOARDING SCHOOL YOU CERTAINLY DON'T HAVE A VISION OF THE FACILITIES BELOW. THE YOUNG GIRLS COME IN FROM SURROUNDING VILLAGES FOR THEIR EDUCATION AND HAVE TO LIVE IN APPALLING CONDITIONS, THERE ARE NO SAFE SANITARY TOILET FACILITIES, NO RUNNING WATER, THEY COOK ALL THEIR OWN MEALS IN THE KITCHEN (MIDDLE PHOTO) AND SWELTER UNDER THE TIN ROOF OF THE DORMITORY. SECURITY AT NIGHT FOR THE GIRLS USING THE TOILETS FOR THE BOYS IS PROBLEMATIC.

We intend to demolish the existing toilet block and build a new one with showers, washing facilities, toilets, and hand basins. Renovate the kitchen with new walls, doors and windows, line the dorm ceiling, provide lights, fans and power to the dormitory and Kitchen. Again new windows and doors will secure the premises. A large water tank will supply ample water for all.
The project will require 3-5 teams of 6 with the help of local villages. These trips are very rewarding and life changing for anyone who has not seen how life is in 3rd world countries. If you are interested in volunteering, have applicable trade skills or just very handy please contact me Rob Moore on 0149637480 or Steve Webb on 0419611405. East Timor Mobile Workshop The Rotary Club of Bright has had a very long history of working in East Timor, over the last 10 years we have been involved in RAWCS projects run by other clubs and projects of our own that have been funded exclusively by the Bright Club. In that time we have been approached my many club expressing their interest in becoming involved at various levels in helping what is the poorest nation in Asia and one of the poorest in the world. East Timor has had a tumultuous past in their efforts to gain independence from Indonesia, this had a violent and lasting effect on the population. There is still a huge amount of work to be done and fortunately strong support from Rotary clubs has gone a long way to helping the country set a path towards a better future. One of the big issues in getting projects underway is the lack of available tools and equipment that is transportable to the remote locations often encountered in East Timor. To solve this problem the Bright Club along with others in our district have purchased a mobile workshop trailer, specially designed and built for the conditions in East Timor. The workshop has been fitted out with an extensive range of tools and equipment, and is now permanently based in Dili, the capital. It is now ready to be used by clubs that are willing to take on a project in the country. This will certainly open the door for any club(s) to get involved as it will remove the major impediment in staring a project. THE TRAILER IS FOR HIRE, WHICH IS TO COVER THE COSTS OF MAINTAINING THE TRAILER, EQUIPMENT, AND ONGOING EXPENSES IN DILI.
